Over the weekend, Alan, who writes the blog “Polyamory In The News” responded to the National Post article.
You can read his original post here.
I have copied my response to his post below. Consider it my official response to the article. Enjoy!
“I have to agree that the article did over-simplify polaymory. You’re “Not always” comment, was quite justified. Polyamory can mean different things to different people. It’s a term that many poly folk I know like to attach their own personalized definition to. Sometimes those definitions are similar, sometimes they are quite different.
Whatever makes each couple feel content, is what I think it should be. Based on many, many conversations I’ve had.
However, in terms of the paper’s audience (especially with the editor’s postponing the article about 4 times due to cold feet), I think the reporter did a good job at getting the “general idea” out to a probably quite conservative readership.
The idea of multiple partners is, for whatever reasons, scary to many folks. I think Zosia did a good job at making it “safe” for those people to read. Baby steps to introduce a topic that could blow a few minds. It’s why it might have appeared clinical and joyless.
It is unfortunate that it’s necessary to dumb it down, but better to hit people on the head with a foam bat, than a crowbar.”
