A friend asked me recently what the point of Twitter was. “Isn’t it just updates?” So I thought about it. I was completely resistant to Twitter at first. I’m an avid Facebook status updater. I even think in stati sometimes. Yes, I really do. Yes, I’m aware that’s pretty lame.
I can’t be Facebook friends with everyone though. Which is where Twitter comes in. It’s the perfect “in-between” communication tool. In between blogging – not anonymously on my end, but yours - and sharing photos with 276 of my nearest and dearest on FB. For those of you who read my blog and choose to then follow my tweets, maybe you get a sense of who I am in my regular everyday life, when I’m not dating or sexing it up in open relationship land. Pretty boring, really. I have a job in digital media which means a lot of my updates are related to my job. Sometimes they’re about my relationships. Sometimes they’re about my cats. Or other random things.
The beauty of it lies in how far Twitter’s reach extends. You can “follow” celebrities if you want. Follow a professional whose opinions you trust. Follow a close friend. Follow anyone you like! You don’t need to be friends with them, but you can still peer into their lives anyway. Sure, that’s what you’re doing now by reading my blog, but when you follow someone on Twitter you get more of the “in between” stuff. You get people in their day to day lives, doing the things that make up who they really are as people outside of their eloquently worded, amazingly thoughtful and profound blog posts. *cough*
I find Twitter fascinating. A few weeks on FB or Twitter and you can learn so much about the people you know … or don’t know. Since studying and conversing with people are my two most favorite things to do in the world, it’s a chronic communicator’s wet dream.
And as someone who considers herself personally to be an “In Between” – somewhere in the middle of polyamory and swinging – I feel a slight loveathon for this little networking tool.
(Promise, I’ll write about sex and love next time.)
